A Story of Strength: The migrant journey

CLIENT

Bread for the World is a faith-based advocacy nonprofit. They equip their members to advocate for policies and programs that can end hunger. I was on staff as a senior manager for digital campaigns when I wrote the story and edited the video.

CHALLENGE

Create a short video that addresses immigration. The grant funding was minimal, so all work needed to be done in-house and without travel.

SOLUTION

I found Mago Reyes, a local immigrant farmer, through an Oregon nonprofit near me. Mago, however, did not speak English and I did not speak Spanish. My colleague interviewed her and recorded the video, which we then had translated. I visited Mago's farm with an interpreter to film her and ask additional questions.

I built the video around a hero’s journey. I wanted viewers to be connect emotionally to her experience and fortitude. My aim was for people to have a deeper understanding of immigrants and their plight.
